Paradoxically enjoyable breakdown and narrative of a very unpleasant – even objectionable – subject, yet a subject that begs for this kind of recapitulation and analysis. Italian culture is shown to be what it always has been: permeated with intense approach/avoidance conflicts centering on sex and death, the two primal experiences that the flesh is heir to. No one senses that better than the Italian artist...(not that Italian Gothic cinema rises to the level of art !)
